Superintendent Announces $40,000 in Artist In Residence Grants

Although our valley is rich in arts and culture, all too often our students miss out on the life-changing experiences afforded through such community venues as theatre, museum and visual arts exhibitions and dance and musical performances. Fortunately, we have dedicated arts teachers in our schools, but they can’t do it alone. To inspire school districts and to support the talented array of community artists, Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, Larry Powell is pleased to announce 12 artist-in-residence grants, four each for the 2011 thru 2014 school years. Each of the $10,000 grants will be awarded to artists or arts organizations in dance, music, theatre, visual arts and digital media. Just imagine the potential for new murals, songs, plays, videos and dances Fresno County students will create in partnership with professional guest artists.

Each artist and/or arts organization will be in residence at one or more schools to provide a combination of the following services in collaboration with the FCOE’s Visual and Performing Arts department:

  • Direct arts instruction to students
  • Professional development in arts and arts integration for teachers
  • Performance or exhibits for students, parents and school staff
  • Model lessons for teachers
  • Arts project that addresses community needs and lives on at the school

Artist applications for this school year are available from August 1 thru the 19th and may be submitted by using the link below or by contacting Robert Bullwinkel, Visual and Performing Arts coordinator, at bbullwinkel@fcoe.org or 779-8702.
