30 Years of Excellence: Achieving academically through team competition
On February 4, 2012 over 450 students converged on the Glacier Point campus in Central Unified School District for the most prestigious and rigorous high school academic event of the year. This year’s 30th Annual Fresno County Academic Decathlon coordinated by the Fresno County Office of Education and sponsored by the Fresno Coin Gallery, Educational Employees Credit Union, Pacific Gas and Electric company, among other local businesses, was a sight to behold as “The Age of Empire” theme was visible and inspiring to competitors and spectators alike. From music, art and literature to science, math, and economics, Decathletes demonstrated their academic prowess in seven objective testing events which culminated in the public display of knowledge and preparation at the Super Quiz. A week prior, the other three events - Speech, Interview and Essay - were completed, on the California State University, Fresno Campus rounding out the “Decathlon Ten”.
This year’s champions from University High School will proudly represent Fresno County at the state event March 15-18 in Sacramento joined by wild card invitees, Edison High School where they will once again be vying for a top ten spot overall and the coveted Small School Champion title which they have won, undefeated, for the past 5 years.
Congratulations to all Decathletes who spent countless hours of study and devotion to this year’s topic. Your medals and trophies are well deserved and we are proud of your accomplishments.
