Board of Education Duties and Responsibilities

The Fresno County Board of Education works with the Superintendent of Schools to provide services and support to all of the individual districts of Fresno County. The board is directly responsible for the education of youth in custody of the County Probation Department through the Juvenile Hall and community Classrooms. Through its Regional Occupational Program (ROP), the Office of Education serves students in Fresno County as well as in Madera and Mariposa counties. Migrant students in Fresno County are also served through the County Office with federal funds designated for the purpose.

The Board has taken an active role in assisting and encouraging the districts through special projects such as early intervention programs and Teachers of Tomorrow Clubs at all high schools, Operation Attend School Regularly and Library, Literacy and Learning campaigns and the establishment of Community Schools. The Board is actively involved in the local Trustees Association as well as the California School Boards Association.

The Board of Education has the responsibilities of reviewing interdistrict transfer and expulsion appeals. These responsibilities are taken very seriously. Each appeal is examined on an individual basis. Board decisions on interdistrict transfer appeals are based on what would be in the best interest of public education. Board decisions on expulsion appeals are based on the record(s) as required by law.
