Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Charter Schools

1. I need the names and addresses of third grade charter elementary schools that are in Clovis that are within a 10 mile radius of Garfield Elementary School.
To find schools you can use the California Schools Directory

2. Is there a charter school available to residents of Coalinga?
The closest Fresno County based Charter would be the Alvina Charter District located within the Caruthers Unified District boundaries. I would recommend calling the Kings County Office of Education to see if they have a Charter School that would be closer to the Coalinga area.

3. I'm looking for a charter school for my son to go to in Fresno.
You can use the state’s California School Directory.

4. I need information on charter schools please.
You can find information on charters schools in Fresno County on this page.

5. Where do I find the rubric for writing a charter school application?
The best place to start with a California Charter School Petition would be at the California Department of Education website. Under the Specialized Programs tab you can find Charter Schools. Under Resources there is a section called CDE Information & Resources for Charter Schools.

6. Are there any charter schools in Fresno that are close to Clovis?

Curriculum and Instruction

1. I want to home school my 6th grader. Is the best way to sign a private school affidavit? I want to use my curriculum.
We don’t handle private schools since they are not publicly funded, however, I know that you are required to complete an affidavit to be ‘legal’. The best place for information and a copy of the affidavit is the website below. Be sure to check out frequently asked questions… http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/

Employment

1. Where do I sign up for the paraprofessional exam?
You can find instructions on signing up for the paraprofessional exam under Inside FCOE, Employment, Paraeducator Exams.

2. I was told that in order to get a career in school counseling, schools are recommending that individual's have a teaching credential, teaching experience as well as a PPS and/or Master's degree in Counseling. Is this true? Or do you know any more information regarding this subject?
I have heard with some positions that they do require prior teaching experience. Depending on the career path you choose, you could enroll in a PPS Credential program. There are several options within the PPS there is school psychology, counseling, social work and others. I believe the master’s degree can be obtained as you accomplish the PPS credential. You may just need a couple of classes to complete the MA in addition to the PPS program. I would refer you to the school of education either at CSU, Fresno or Fresno Pacific for more information.

3. How can I tell if a job is open for outside candidates, and know which jobs to apply for with your company?
All jobs are open for outside recruitment unless stated specifically “FCOE employees only” in the posting. Please feel free to apply.

4. Can I apply online for the paraeducator MEES program opening?
Sorry, we currently do not have an online application process. How to apply.

General Education Issues

1. How do I obtain a copy of my high school transcripts?
Contact your high school directly and they should be able to direct you to the appropriate department at your school district office.

2. I am a local state funded preschool director and am in need of a Punjabi translator. Does the county office offer translation services in this language? Please advise. Thank you.
My office does not provide translation services but I recommend you contact a local school district – or one of the larger districts in your area since most have access to people who translate. Ask the switchboard operator and if they are not sure, ask to speak to the Special Education director since they bring in people for IEP conferences. Hope that helps.

3. Is it possible to get school records back in 1922?
Please contact the school district regarding old school records. A list of Fresno County school districts can be found under Home, School Districts.

4. Greetings - since moving to Fresno I've been told that there are over 100 languages spoken in Fresno Unified alone. I'm currently looking for a list of either the languages spoken, or the cultures represented, in Fresno County - is this something that FCOE has pulled together? Thank you for your time!

Transcripts for colleges

1. How do I get a transcript from a college in Clovis that is no longer there?
Without knowing which college you are referring to, I recommend an internet search to see if you can locate another campus – even in another state - or corporate head quarters. If another campus exists, they would have your transcript on file. Only other thought if the first suggestion fails is to contact any organizations that might have received your transcript at your request (work or other schools). These organizations might be able to certify that a copy sent to you by them is a true copy of the original. Hope you find what you need.
